Guillermo Gómez, ISEF Mirasur Student, Wins Figure Skating World Cup Semifinal
At just 18 years old, Guillermo Gómez continues to write new chapters in his remarkable figure skating career. The first-year TSAF student at ISEF Mirasur as recently crowned champion of the Artistic Series World Cup Semifinal in the Senior Men’s Free Skating category, setting a senior scoring record in his international debut at the highest level of competition. We spoke with him about this achievement, the demands of elite sport, and how his studies at ISEF are helping him take his athletic career to the next level.
How has studying TSAF helped you in your athletic performance?
I feel very proud of everything I am achieving and, above all,
of the fact that it is helping me continue to improve and grow, both as an athlete and as a person.
Since joining TSAF, I feel that I have gained many valuable tools that have had a positive impact on my sporting performance. For example, I have noticed that my competition programs feel less demanding because I am now used to a higher level of physical effort, which perfectly complements what I do in figure skating. Activities focused on cardiovascular fitness and endurance have helped me improve my physical condition significantly.
n addition, the program has helped me develop greater resilience and mental strength. It’s true that my daily routine is now more demanding and exhausting because I do much more physical activity than before, but it has also taught me to be more consistent, stronger, and better prepared to face challenges.
Balancing your studies with elite-level sport is not easy. What does a typical day look like for you?
I get up in the morning and come to ISEF. As soon as classes finish, I head straight to training. I usually eat in the car and train from 4:00 p.m. until around 5:30 p.m. almost every day.
After that, I often go to physiotherapy sessions or continue with strength and conditioning training and specific skating skills work. I also dedicate time to ballet, which is a very important part of my preparation. In short, almost my entire afternoon revolves around skating.
After winning gold at the World Cup, what is your next goal?
I have qualified for the World Cup Final, so my next objective is to compete there and perform as well as possible. If that leads to winning the title, even better.
However, my main goal this season is to qualify for the World Championships in Paraguay in my first year competing as a senior athlete.
What advice would you give to young people who dream of becoming professional athletes?
I would tell them to chase their dreams because, with hard work, effort, and discipline, anything is possible.
If you truly want something, go after it regardless of what others may say. Work hard, stay motivated, and above all, believe in yourself. Self-confidence is one of the most powerful tools an athlete can have.
